Inside the Spice Shop

FYI - for those who were left wanting to know more about the Morris J. Golombeck Spice building that we posted about earlier in the week, the I Love Franklin Avenue blog did a phenomenal, in-depth write up on the business and the building itself.   The post includes insight into the history of the building, which apparently used to serve as a brewery and even ranks in American history as the first _______ (read the post to find out what that "first" is).  It's also chock full of links ...

It’s All About You Party Favors

While most of us are familiar with Party City located in Atlantic Mall downtown Brooklyn, many may be less familiar with its locally owned, Crown Heights equivalent, "It's All about You Party Favors" located at 788 Prospect Place. We happened upon the cheery and festive store front recently (this blogger certainly wishes she'd known about the shop sooner having spent over $150 at Party City just last week). The proprietor, Cathy, has been a homeowner in Crown Heights for about 11 years. After 1...

Brooklyn Beer Barn Closed

Sadly, the rumor mill has it that the Brooklyn Beverage (Beer) Barn, which we blogged about earlier, is closed for good.  Based on the second hand reports from the rumor mill [NP1]: despite the great concept behind BBB, the sales  were stilted.  The owner wanted to re-open the establishment as a beer bar to boost sales, however, his plans were thwarted by the Albany shinanigans (couldn't get the liquor license in time).  UGH! [NP1] We have not independently verified the rumor...

Crown Heights Residential: Sullivan Place and Montgomery Street

It is simply amazing the variety of architecture you encounter when walking around Crown Heights. We encountered this beautiful enclave of 1 and 2-family (semi) detached brick homes on Sullivan Place and Montgomery Street between Bedford and Franklin Avenues. A similar style of housing exists on Union and President Streets. Photo Credit: Nostrand Park (Brick Homes on Sullivan Place and Montgomery Street in Crown Heights) We were not able to dig up much information about the houses, but we ...
