Bois Caiman Re-Enactment Ceremony

On Saturday, August 15th, 2009, Brooklynites are invited to be part of an event unlike any other, a re-enactment of the Bois Caiman, the ceremony that launched the Haitian revolution to abolish slavery. This year’s re-enactment ceremony honors the 218th anniversary of Bois Caiman’s original staging.

Local actors will introduce attendees to Boukman, Cecile Fatima, Biassou, Toussaint Louverture, Marie Jeanne, Zabeth, and all the other courageous heroes who combined their efforts to change their destiny in the pursuit of freedom.

Saturday’s festivitis also include special performances by:

  • Legendary Performing Artist Patrick Lacroix.
  • Musical Performance by members of the Kreyòl Rap Movement:
  • Neg Maron, Voodoo Child, JBezo, Seca Konsa, Euneek
  • Master Drummer Tiga Jean Baptiste and his band will beat the drum all night long.
  • Spoken Word by: Ella Turenne, Melissa Beauvery, Marylin Laurent, Jacques Dorcely
  • Art Exhibit of mixed-media series “ Harlem Hues” and Metal artwork by Self-Taught Artist Carl Thelemaque

This event is a Dream for Haiti initiative. All proceeds from the night will benefit Dream for Haiti : An art project which has the objective to raise funds to:

  • Bring awareness and help increase local capacities to address disaster mitigation and preparedness
  • Reduce the environmental impact of future disasters;
  • Rehabilitate one school that is devastated by the hurricanes, in Croix des Bouquets, Haiti ;
  • Promote the unique arts of Haiti and establish a platform for Haitian talents abroad.

Tickets for Bois Caiman are $10 and can be reserved in advanced by contacting 347.998.4938.  The ceremony begins at 7pm and will take place at Café Sucré, 520 DeKalb Ave, Brooklyn , NY.
