While many yellow taxis in NYC have recently been outfitted with those fancy new interactive television sets, none of them can boast actual LIVE performances for passengers. Well that’s just what the Brooklyn based Dollar Van Demos is providing:
From the borough of Brooklyn, Dollar Van Demos is a showcase of talented musicians, rappers and comedians performing inside a dollar van with real passengers. Dollar vans provide a much-needed transportation for neighborhoods under-served by mass transit. Typically operated by West Indian drivers, the ride is cheap, adventurous and now immensely entertaining with the addition of performers singing their hearts out.
We only found out about DVD when the sent us some pics from the Labor Day Parade (see below). While Crown Heights tends to have more livery cabs than dollar vans (which we tend to see a lot more of in Flatbush/East Flatbush) we thought that you might nonetheless find this interesting.
You might expect some passengers to get annoyed at being unwitting extras in a live music video, but from the couple of videos we watched, the passengers seemed to take it in stride – some either chuckling and/or bobbing right along with the music. Either way, it is without a doubt a creative idea!
Also, much thanks to DVD for providing some additional pictures from the 2009 West Indian Labor Day Parade:
