The authors discuss and sign their new works of graphic nonfiction. David Small’s memoir of childhood cancer—and his family’s mad-scientist home-cures—has already been called an “emotionally raw, artistically compelling, and psychologically devastating graphic memoir of childhood trauma…Graphic narrative at its most cathartic,” by Kirkus Reviews. In what Dave Eggers has called an “essential addition to the ongoing conversation about what Katrina means,” Josh Neufeld depicts in vivid color the extraordinary true stories of seven New Orleans residents and their tales of survival in the days leading up to and following Hurricane Katrina. Moderated by John Hogan of Graphic Novel Reporter. Featuring wine by Bear Flag.

About Stitches:
Widely heralded as one of the most acclaimed and well-known contemporary illustrators of children’s and young adult books, David Small has won virtually every medal that the world of children’s literature has to offer. Now, Small turns for the very first time to an adult audience in his extraordinary and unforgettable graphic memoir, Stitches: A Memoir. The major graphic debut of the season, Stitches has already been recognized by Stan Lee, the cocreator of Spider-Man as a “groundbreaking work, [that] has elevated the art of the graphic novel and brought it to new creative heights.” Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Jules Feiffer was so affected by Small’s book that he said his first reading of Stitches left him “speechless, and in awe. David Small presents us with a profound and moving gift of graphic literature that has the look of a movie and reads like a poem,” adding that he could not “put the work down” and that “we are in the hands of a master.”

A silent movie masquerading as a book, Stitches is filled with dazzling, hallucinogenic images that depict dreams which render nightmare into a type of children’s fairytale. As with To Kill a Mockingbird, the reader learns at the end of David’s horrifying journey that good can emerge from evil. This is a thrilling work that is as much a memoir as a tale of redemption. It informs us that art has the power to transform.

About A.D.: New Orleans After the Deluge:
A.D.: New Orleans After the Deluge is a masterful portrait of a city under siege. In this beautiful graphic novel, longtime American Splendor artist Josh Neufeld introduces us to Denise, a counselor and social worker, and a sixth-generation New Orleanian; “The Doctor,” a proud fixture of the French Quarter; Abbas and Darnell, two friends who face the storm from Abbas’ family-run market; Kwame, a pastor’s son just entering his senior year of high school; and the young couple Leo and Michelle, who both grew up in the city. Each is forced to confront the same wrenching decision—whether to stay or flee. As beautiful as it is poignant, A.D. presents a city in chaos and shines a bright, profoundly human light on the tragedies and triumphs that took place within it.

About David Small:
David Small is the recipient of the Caldecott Medal, a Christopher Medal, and the E. B. White Award for his picture books, which include Imogene’s Antlers, The Gardener, and So, You Want to be President? He lives in Mendon, Michigan.

Josh Neufeld is the writer/artist of the Xeric Award-winning graphic travelogue A Few Perfect Hours (and Other Stories from Southeast Asia & Central Europe).
