After months of campaigning New Yorkers finally decided on their Democratic nominees for Public Advocate and Comptroller. Yesterday’s runoff victories by former city council members Bill de Blasio and John Liu of Brooklyn and Queens respectfully brought this year’s primary season to a close. Both de Blasio and Liu bested big name opponents, Mark Green in the Public Advocate’s race and David Yassky in the runoff for Comptroller. Green a longtime New York politico who was running for his old job suffered his third consecutive defeat, and will likely retire (again) from seeking elected office. Yassky, a Chuck Schumer protege who was endorsed by the NY Times, was never able to establish a ground game to compete with Liu’s. It will be interesting to see if Yassky can rebound from this defeat and find another city-wide seat in the future.
Liu’s victory is particularly notable because he becomes the first Asian American elected to city-wide office in New York, and like Comptrollers in recent past, his name will now be regularly mentioned as a Mayoral candidate.
