Lupe Fiasco – Enemy of the State: A Love Story

For all of you Lupe Fiasco fans, the man is back with a new mixtape Enemy of the State: A Love Story released on Thanksgiving Day.  Taking a page from the Lil Wayne book of mixtapes (keep your fanbase fired up by flooding the market with free product), Lupe plans to release another mixtape entitled Friend of the People on Christmas Day. On Enemy of the State, Lupe rhymes over popular beats from past and present.  "Yoga Flame", a freestyle over Lil Wayne's "Fireman" and "The One", ...

Shop Crown Heights!

Maybe it's just us, but it seems like Crown Heights businesses are never fully represented on the borough wide business promotions, such as restaurant week. Well fortunately, that is not the case this year. Just last weekend, two Crown Heights art museums were featured on the free Brooklyn art tour extravaganza. Now, as part of this year's Shop Brooklyn promotion sponsored by the Borough President's office, from November 27th through December 25th, participating Brooklyn merchants - includ...

Happy Thanksgiving

The NP staff will be on hiatus beginning this Wednesday and will be back in full effect next Monday.  We hope that everyone enjoys their Thanksgiving holiday.  As you make your final preparations, please take a moment to think about those who might be less fortunate this holiday season and consider making a donation at a local food pantry.  Our own St. Gregory's has seen their shelves depleted due to overwhelming demand this past year and is in dire need of additional contribution...

Super Wings: A Review

Look, it’s a bird! No, not up there. Look lower. On the ground. Of the fowl sorts. Off the corner of Nostrand and Union comes Super Wings, a wings joint with a tasty Caribbean twist. Being from Florida, wings are one of my ultimate delights. When my wife told me one was being built, my heart fluttered. I mean, you can’t watch the Gators on the road to win another championship without wings, right? Living off Nostrand Avenue & Eastern Parkway, I thought to myself, “Well, the...

From Hawthorne Street: Reducing Crime in Brooklyn Neighborhoods: Not As Hard as You Think

With the uptick in crime in the neighborhood, we wanted to direct your attention to a great article from the Hawthorne Street blog with some interesting crime reduction tips: ... The problem, as I see it, is that people keep focusing on the wrong solutions. Having cops on every block isn't the answer. Nor is expecting residents to regularly patrol the streets, vigilante-style. But there are a few things the average person can do that don't require transforming into a Chuck Norris character... a...

Felix Da Housecat and Diddy Present: Lectro Black Last Train to Paris Mixtape

In Lectro Black: Last Train to Paris Mixtape, P. Diddy and Chicago house legend Felix Da Housecat are "here to take your mind, body and soul," or at the very least they want to make you dance.  Only Diddy would think that he could get your soul in exchange for a free mixtape, stop being cheap and throw in a bottle of Ciroc or some Proactiv, but I digress. The mixtape was released earlier this year, August to be exact, in anticipation of Diddy's concept album Last Train to Paris. ...

Rastafarians Lead Healthy Food Movement In Crown Heights

Photo credit: NostrandPark.com As local leader, Mark W. Griffith pointed out the Central Brooklyn could benefit from a little "food justice". However, Crown Heights probably does not get enough credit for the healthy food options available around town. Thanks in large part to the Rastafarian culture practiced by many residents, with its focus on "ital" (meaning healthy, natural or vegetarian) living there is actually large offering of healthy food options in Crown Heights. From Wi...

Berean Community and Family Life Center

From an NP Reader... I'd like to mention the Berean Community and Family Life Center as an important resource in Central Brooklyn. They offer medical services, including consultations with nutritionists and health assessments. They also have a drumline for youth and offer a wellness program for teenage girls. They also host a number of health fairs in the summer months. The staff is very dedicated. They have a website and are located on Bergen Street near Rochester Avenue.
