Where’s Our Brown Signs!?

Maybe we’re just suffering from a bit of historic district envy, but it seems like every other historic district has those distinctive brown street signs adorning their streets.  Well what about Crown Heights (North)?

As we recall from one of the town hall meetings in connection with the landmarking, a representative from the Crown Heights North Association said they had been in tentative communications with the Department of Transportation regarding the signage and the estimated cost would be about $4,000.

That’s a drop in the bucket.  Heck … Brooklyn Heights is spending $2.7 million to install new old (read antique) light posts.

Perhaps city council can contribute some funds.  Or I’m sure that we can get at least 4,000 Crown Heightsonians to contribute $1 each to a street sign fund.

And actually maybe it’s better that it come from a grass roots campaign.  It would be a way to engage  residents about the neighborhood and get us to reflect on why our neighborhood was worthy of designation in the first place.  It’s about community pride.

Let us know what you think.  Maybe if we get a big enough mandate going, we can reach out to the folks at CHNA and get the ball rolling!
