Lil Wayne – No Ceilings

You can call Lil Wayne a lot of things, but you cannot call him lazy.  Wayne is everywhere.  At this point, Wayne is so everywhere that it’s become a cliche to say that he’s everywhere.  Despite his last studio album, the double platinum Carter III, being released over a year ago in June 2008, Wayne has managed to stay in the public eye through his work with protege Drake, his long awaited rock album Rebirth and of course his impending trial for gun possession.

Rest assured that hip-hop’s latest super hero would not let his fans go without for too long.  Enter No Ceilings, Wayne’s latest mixtape originally leaked on October 22 and was officially released on October 31.  The mixtape features Wayne rapping over popular tracks such as F.L.Y.’s ”Swag Surfin’“, Jay-Z’s “D.O.A.“, and Black-Eyed Peas “I Gotta Feeling“.

While Wayne is technically jackin’ for beats, he makes each song his own, avoiding the potential for a cheap rehash.  This is largely due to the fact that Wayne raps his way through the majority of songs, dropping the familiar hooks and using little of the original artist’s voice.

Rhyme-wise, this is Wayne at his best, piling off-the-wall metaphors and similes on top of each other for a magnificent result and ending each song with a shout to the title of the mixtape, “No Ceilings”.
