As reported by the New York Times, the City Council voted 47-2 in favor of establishing a five-minute grace period for parking violations. If this legislation were to go into effect, city residents would have an extra five minutes to move their cars or feed a meter before a traffic agent can issue a ticket. Mayor Michael Bloomberg has vowed to veto this bill. Bloomberg believes that this bill only moves the inevitable argument forward five minutes and is therefore a shoddy piece of legislation.
We’re almost inclined to side with Mayor Bloomberg on this one. An inititiative to decrease alternate side of the parking to only one day a week might prove more useful to many New Yorkers. One other idea would be to have one of the street cleaning days on a weekend, that way relieving many New Yorkers the hassle of having to move their cars before heading to work.
But what are your thoughts, do you think this grace period is a good idea?
