It’s the little things…

The great thing about photography is learning to see the little things. I have a very understanding wife who is used to me taking photos of everything whenever we go somewhere. What drives her nuts, though, is when I stop to take a photo of a drain cover or manhole cover or, even worse, stuff I see on the sidewalks and roads. Especially things that are embedded in the asphalt or odd things captured in cement. Here's a collection of photos taken on Park Place. Get the flash player here: http:/...

FIVE MYLES GALLERY: Strange Intersections

EXTENDED TO FRIDAY 2-5-2010 Strange Intersections New Work by Engels The work in this exhibition by the Haitian born artist Engels shows an artist’s sure eye for details that, when combined on a canvas or a piece of plywood, become a unit. These solid constructions have the authority of a finished work; they none-the-less reveal the process of how they came to be this way. For Engels they resemble a journey, still ongoing and not afraid of detours. Engels describes his work as ...

Rep. Clarke Hosts Appropriation Seminar

On Monday January 25th Congressional  Representative Yvette Clarke hosted an appropriations workshop for local business and non-profits.  This workshop was intended as a way of giving organizations unfamiliar with the appropriations process insight into how appropriations generally work and the application process.  Facilitated by Rep. Clarke's deputy chief of staff Algene T. Sajery and City Park Foundation's Nicole Johnson, Monday's workshop was attended by upwards of one-hundred people from...

Abigail’s Café and Wine Bar is For Sale

Apparently, Abigail's Café and Wine Bar, 807 Classon Ave., is for sale.  The asking price is $675,000. It's a shame that the owners couldn't make it a success. Open for a little under two years now, Abigail's seemed to have problems from the start. It's difficult to make any money without a liquor license, which it took them many months after opening to obtain. As one reviewer on the Brooklynian web site said, it's easier to deal with their notoriously slow service if you have a drink in ...

Wine Spots Around Crown Heights

By Laurel Brown and Ferentz Lafargue While attending a small get-together this weekend someone mentioned that the Heights Chateau, located at 123 Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn Heights, will deliver wines to Crown Heights. We were amazed, because as most of us can attest, it's hard to cajole businesses to deliver to the "fringe".  And we definitely wouldn't expect a Brooklyn Heights wine bar to be so open.  Yet, even though our party was on Union Street between New York  and Brooklyn Aven...

What Goes Up – 950 St. Johns

It's been about 7 months since we first visited the 6 story building being erected at St. John's.  When we visited 2 months later, not much had changed. Upon our most recent visit, we noted that with the exception of some new windows and insulation, it still doesn't look like they've made very much progess, even though there's a valid building permit. There was apparently a stop work order on the building around January 2009, but that was lifted about a month later. One commenter fr...

Crown Heights Nostalgia – Eastern Parkway and Nostrand Avenue

If you're not a regular reader of the Brooklyn blog, Brownstoner, then you may have missed some really great Crown Heights commentary by the likes of posters Nostalgic on Park Avenue and Montrose Morris.  Personally, they are two of my favorite posters on Brownstoner.  They are both captivating local historians, offering personal accounts of Brooklyn and Crown Heights that regularly remind readers of this area's majesty. So, I was  delighted to see that Nostalgic weighed in on our recent post...
