What Goes Up – 950 St. Johns

Credit: Shawn Rosvold

It’s been about 7 months since we first visited the 6 story building being erected at St. John’s.  When we visited 2 months later, not much had changed.

Upon our most recent visit, we noted that with the exception of some new windows and insulation, it still doesn’t look like they’ve made very much progess, even though there’s a valid building permit.

There was apparently a stop work order on the building around January 2009, but that was lifted about a month later.

One commenter from our previous post made an interesting observation:

The owner just snuck under the deadline, as that lot is now calendared for landmarking and any new applications for building permits will be run by Landmark Preservation Commission staffers. Somehow I don’t think this one would have passed.

I have heard from a usually reliable source that the owner plans to live there. I guess he doesn’t understand how offended the community is by his creativity. Live and learn.

We will continue to wait and watch to see if this prediction comes true.

I live directly across the street from this monstrosity. It is horrible. It blocks the sun from entering my windows.

When the last big storm came through stuff was blowing off the roof.

I havent seen them doing any work in quite a while now. Every now and then they used to come work for a day and then be gone for a few months. I don’t know if you have to do work to keep your construction permit. It seems like whoever was building it ran out of money…
