I was hipped to this quaint organic section in one of the Korean fruit markets on Nostrand (between Union and President) the other day; and quite honestly, it caught me off guard. A couple of days later I spotted an organic section in another fruit market on Nostrand on the north side of Eastern Parkway near Lincoln Place.
After thinking about it for a while, I’m not sure why I was so surprised. Nam’s on Franklin Avenue converted to organic a while ago. Long before Nam’s made the change, there were quite a few organic shops already on Nostrand, including – the one that stands out most prominently in my mind – Nature’s Organic. Moreover, the area has long been a destination for the Caribbean diaspora and enthusiasts in search of “back home” sugar cane and kenep that are as organic as can be.
And as my Trinidadian friend reminds me, “in the islands, everything we eat is natural and organic, so its not new to us. I used to pick mangoes from trees in my front yard. It doesn’t get more local, green, or organic than that.”

There are quite a few places that offer organic products up on Fulton Street, too. The Foodtown has a small organic section, and Tony’s Country Life (on Fulton between Nostrand and New York Aves) is pretty much all organic.
