I recently came across a couple of great things on Nostrand Ave. First, a new wine and liquor store at the corner of Nostrand and St. Johns. (Note to self, add this to our previous list of local wine and spirit venues.) I’m crossing my fingers that it will have a greater range of offerings than what we currently have on our little stretch of Nostrand. Nothing against Beringer or Yellowtail, but sometimes you just want something a little more special and don’t want to have to trek too far to get it. Welcome to the neighborhood.
After scooting past the liquor store, I noticed some construction activity at 765 Nostrand, so I asked the guy supervising what was going on. He said they’re building a new medical office. I rushed home to get my camera, and just as I started shooting, the owner drove up. He was curious about my interest. I told him who I was and that I’d always admired the building.
The few times in the past that I’ve seen the gate up gave me a glimpse of what this building must have looked like in better times. According to the owner, the building started life as a bank and in it’s last incarnation had been a discount store of some kind. It caught fire at some point and has been vacant since then.
The owner explained that he bought the building about 6 months ago after spending years trying to find out who owned it. He told me it’s going to be a full service clinic with medical doctors, first class dental care, various therapys and more. Unfortunately, he couldn’t estimate on the opening date because when you’re dealing with the city, anything can happen. In any event, I’m glad that it will be put to good use.
Another sign of great things happening in Crown Heights.

When I first saw that bright yellow and red awning screaming “Liquor and Wine”, I thought “Nooo – not a liquor store!” But honestly, I think I was more offended by the color scheme than anything else. But I agree, I hope they have a nice range of offerings.
Glad you got the scoop on that old bank building. The medical business seems to be big around here. There’s a few medical related facilities already on Nostrand. Personally, I would have liked this place to be restored as a bank, but hey, it’s not my building. Hopefully they do a quality job with the renovations.
My dad had a savings account there when he was in high school. Great news it’s getting fixed up and put to use again.
