I recently lost my job. It came as quite a shock after five years of producing a national talk radio show. Budget cutbacks were the reason. Fortunately, I was given a severance package and my health benefits will be paid until the end of April. Soon, I will have to join the millions of others collecting unemployment. Again, I’m probably luckier than most because my wife is working and I’ll be able to qualify for her health plan. It’s not as good as mine was, but it’s certainly better than nothing, which a lot of people have – no money, no benefits.
I came across a fascinating piece on a blog called AlterNet about a union for the unemployed. What a brilliant idea! United and unemployed, we have a huge voice that the politicians cannot ignore. Joining the union is free and requires nothing more from you, unless you want to become more involved. The Union of the Unemployed’s (U Cubed for short) mission is to become a voice for the millions of unemployed people who have no voice.

With so many people in the city, and particularly in Central Brooklyn, looking for work, I thought this would be a great resource. You can read the AlterNet piece about U Cubed here: http://bit.ly/cOxcWS, And here’s the web site for the Union of the Unemployed: http://www.unionofunemployed.com, which is chock full of great resources, discount deals and general information.
