New Restaurant – Joey’s Gourmet Lunchboxx Finally Open

After much speculation and curiosity about what the heck a “gourmet lunchbox” is, it looks like Joey’s Gourmet Lunchboxx, whose awning first popped up at 707 Nostrand Avenue about a year ago,  is finally open.   We picked up a menu yesterday (credit to Shawn Rosvold), which is an array of foods – paninis, omelets, wraps, subs, burgers, etc.  – all at very reasonable prices.  Let’s just hope that the food lives up.  Folks have already started weighing in our comments section below and on Brooklynian – so far so very good!

The food is GREAT!! I finally stopped in this afternoon. I can’t believe how reasonably priced they are!

    I ordered a side of Tofu w/ spinach -$1.20
A side of grilled shrimp $1.50
    A side of chicken $1.50
And a Philly Cheese Steak that came with fries – $6.00

And the food was delicious! I don’t know what I expected, but Joey’s surpassed every expectation.

The price of all their burgers include fries and I think the price starts at $4.00 for the veggie burger up to $5.50 for beef or turkey.

I haven’t tried their breakfast or coffee, but what I did order was simply delicious!!!!

My guy and I stopped by yesterday I had the regular burger and he had the turkey burger. We both agreed the regular burger was great!! We got that and fries for about $5 (after tax). I didn’t taste the turkey burger, but he said it was ‘eh’.

The prices are simply terrific. I will most definitely be returning to try some of their other dishes.

The decor is interesting – you can tell a lot of thought went into, but I can’t exactly pinpoint the style. Maybe sports bar meets coffee shop. I think “gourmet lunchbox” is a good descriptor. It is nice though. Plus, the place has wifi and a little outdoor patio area.

The one thing was the young man behind the counter. Charming young guy, but needs some training. Took him three times to get my order because he was busy conversing with a friend. But he he very friendly, which kind of makes up for the shoddy service.

The last thing I will say is that happily, because the prices are affordable, a broader swatch of the neighborhood, including residents with lower incomes, will be able to enjoy the restaurant. At the same time, it has touches that are desirable to “gentrifiers” such as myself – wifi, coffee, patio space.

One other thing – you can tell there is definitely a level of business sophistication that the owner has based on some of the little things that I noticed – like having their branding on the takeout bags and having the staff wear branded uniforms. Even their branding colors are bold and memorable. A lot of small business owners don’t understand the power of doing things like that. Glad they are here.

let’s see how the residents in the building behind joey’s feel about this “patio space” before touting it..

@professorf – I doubt the patio would get rowdy. It is not big at all. It maybe holds 8 people.

Went back for another burger and I got the shrimp. Shrimp were great. The burger itself was well seasoned, but it had a sweet onion on it that totally ruined the taste for me. I prefer fresh, uncooked veggies on my burger. Not to mention the lettuce was soggy :-( But the prices are good and most of my food experiences have been good so I’ll definitely still be back though.

I went to Joey’s last week and enjoyed the free Wifi. Though, my bagel and tea were just okay, the owner was vibrant and made it worth coming back for another try.

All I can say is watch your health!! From what I’ve heard, they have people working in the kitchen with no certifications and are not following Health Deparment standards!! I’ve been to the place and it doesn’t seem that would be true at all. I would hate to see such a great place close for major violations…tsk tsk…
