History in the Making – Come Listen to the Crown Heights Oral History Project

If you’ve been following these young ladies’ progress with us this whole time, then you will be excited to here that the girls from the Crown Heights Oral History Project are ready to debut their .  I had the pleasure of meeting with the girls a couple of months ago, and let me tell you, They and their mentor, Alex Kelly, have really put a lot of work into this project.  And when we have young people actively engaged in doing positive things for this neighborhood, we should all do what we can to support.  Positive reinforcement!

Listen To This: Crown Heights Oral History Project in collaboration with the Crow Hill Community Association and NYC Grassroots Media Coalition will host a community listening event celebrating the formal donation of the new Crown Heights interview archive.

For several months, 5 students from Paul Robeson High School in Brooklyn, New York have been working hard to interview more than 45 people who have lived in Crown Heights for over 15 years, in order to learn more about the history of the community.

Through this project the students have developed a genuine interest in the development and history of Crown Heights, enhanced public interest in preserving history through listening to local stories, allowed community members to tell their stories to the public, and collected personal histories to be archived for future research and interest.

The formal listening event and archival donation will take place at Launchpad, a creative gathering place focused on the arts and community programs, in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.  During this event, the students will showcase their favorite stories, and storytellers will be on hand to recount their personal memories of living in the ever-changing Crown Heights community.

Representatives from the Brooklyn Historical Society, the Eastern Parkway Brooklyn Public Library, Medgar Evers College, Weeksville Heritage Center and Brooklyn College Community Partnership will also be present to accept the donation from project director Alex Kelly and the students from Paul Robeson High School.
