The historical occasion we are marking is the 1946 July 4 Treaty of Manila, Philippines.  Because independence isn’t something achieved overnight and it’s not something to be used as an excuse for subjugating others, it’s something negotiated over time through continued resistance and self-examination. Manila!

For the record: The Philippine Declaration of Independence occurred on June 12, 1898 in Cavite II el Viejo (now Kawit), Cavite, Philippines.  June 12 is the date now celebrated as Independence – because sometimes, you got to declare your independence more than once.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippine_Declaration_of_Independence
