Reduce + Reuse + Recycle + Project Re-Generation

While Crown Heights’ track record for recycling may be one of the worst in Brooklyn, one local organization is working to change that – and is providing community teenagers with jobs to boot.

Project Re-Generation‘s (an organization near and dear to this blogger) Foot Soldier program is a maintenance program that works with neighborhood teens to provide homeowners in the Bed-Stuy and Crown Heights, with yard sweeping, garbage removal and snow shoveling services. The program uniquely links the stipends teens earn to their academic achievements, job readiness trainings, household responsibilities, physical activities, personal development workshops, and community projects. (If you’ve noticed little green fatigue colored signs around town … that’s the Foot Soldiers).

Well the program is now undertaking a new planet friendly initiative. The Foot Soldiers have recently engaged in a new partnership with Planet Green in which they now collect and recycle old cell phones/ink jet cartridges. For more info visit: http://www.planetgreenrecycle.com/prg.

For more info on PR-G, check out this NY1 coverage – New Yorker of the Week – Brooklyn Man Gets Teens to Care About Their Neighborhood.

And if you want to get involved get involved at PR-G, consider joining the “1000 People Who Bang” campaign – a network of professionals who donate at least an hour of time and $25 quarterly to the organization. Pretty easy way to get involved in the neighborhood, keep our kids of the street, and make an impact.
