Folks, could it be that Crow Hill Bistro, Crown Height”s destination restaurant and bar that was once Tavern on Nostrand, is no longer?
It seems to be the question that we are getting a lot recently. And unfortunately, we don’t have an official answer. And we have asked around A LOT.
However, the unofficial answer that we have heard from a variety of sources is they are closed for good. That would make sense since it has been at least 6 weeks since they were last open. According to the automated message that picks up when you dial their number their telephone number has been “temporarily disconnected”.
We will continue to hope that this is just a “temporary” closure. The owners have not responded to inquiries on their popular Facebook page about their status, and have posted no notice to patrons, which just seems an odd move for a place that was so popular and had a loyal customer base. So maybe there is a surprise in the waiting for us (we can hope, can’t we?)
But if they are closed, why? A variety of reasons and theories have been offered to us – including that they had been shut down during the drug bust (ummm … no that is definitely not the case). Is it that this type of business is just not yet sustainable in this neighborhood? Well it seemed to generally have a good flow of business…
The most plausible, yet also unconfirmed reason offered is that a couple of the owners have divested and are moving out of the city. But until we see hear from the owners or see a “for rent” sign go up, we are going to keep hope out that there is life yet in Crow Hill Bistro.

Crow Hill Bistro was very hit or miss. I suspect it was popular b/c of the location. I didn’t live in the nabe when it was Tavern on the Nostrand. By “hit or miss” I mean the staff wasn’t properly trained in either customer service or customer service recovery. 2 out of the 4 times I went there involved lots of waiting. Brunch included cold coffee and steak with no steak knife.
So Groupon just emailed me and said that they would give me credit for the 2 Groupons I had purchased for Crow Hill Bistro. When I originally contacted them they said they had to wait to hear from the owners. Not sure if they heard something definite or if they just hadn’t heard *anything*.
Although…not sure if this is normal for Groupon…but the restaurant had already received the money and so I’m being refunded in money to spend at Groupon. Meaning Crow Hill got $18 from each of the 157 who purchased it — and yet it was never used to buy food. (it was $18 for $40 worth of food). That’s $2,826 in income for goods no customers got. Seems weird…
@ Liz: Glad you got your $$ back! I used my Groupon the first time I went to Crow Hill. I really wanted to like it as it’s right in the nabe. Who knows? Maybe another restaurant will take over soon!
