Social Media for Kids

A new initiative by Crown Heights’ Garnett Alcindor – the owner of Collective Concept PR, affiliate of About Time Boutique, and head of the merchants association on Franklin Avenue – is about the take hold in the neighborhood – Social Media for Kids (SMFK).

SMFK “will educate youth and their families on how social media can be used as a tool to enhance young peoples’ academic, social and professional futures, to benefit our community, the borough of Brooklyn and the City of New York. Social Media for Kids® will also instill a healthy suspicion in kids, helping them protect themselves against potential negative uses and consequences of social media.”

Sure we bloggers can spend all day online and emerge relatively well-adjusted (emphasis on relatively), but what about our young people who may be targets of cyber-bullying or who just might not understand the power of social media for community building purposes.  SMFK seeks to address these issues.

Having already launched in a school in East New York, the team behind the project is currently fundraising for $5,000 to help fully launch the program. For more information on how you can be a part of Social Media for Kids, call 347.687.SMFK, email smfk10@gmail.com.
