What is Nostrand Park?

Founded in 2008 Nostrand Park exists to serve as a virtual town square for Crown Heights, and to offset the dearth of  resources available that give a full perspective on the neighborhood, particularly from the vantage point of its residents. Crown Heights is a complex neighborhood. It is a neighborhood of mansions and projects and historic districts. Of rastas and rabbis. Of new comers and old timers. It is a beautiful story of immigration and gentrification. Of decay and rebirth. Of affluence and struggle. Crown Heights is so much richer and fuller than what is currently available in the media and we wanted to create a space to honor that. Thus, Nostrand Park was born.

But what exactly is “Nostrand Park”?

No, it is not an enclave or park in Crown Heights.   Nostrand and Park are two Brooklyn streets that run through Crown Heights. Though many of the borders in Crown Heights are contested, the intersection of Nostrand and Park represents one area that is undeniably Crown Heights. And so we are Nostrand Park.

Writing featured on Nostrand Park covers arts & culture, news, business and personal profiles highlighting some of Crown Heights’ sterling characters and institutions, as well as, book & music reviews and political commentary penned by neighborhood residents.

In recognition of the efforts of Nostrand Park’s staff and volunteers and its strong backing among Crown Heights community members, Nostrand Park was accepted in to the Fund For the City of New York’s prestigious non-profit incubator program in April 2010.
