What is Nostrand Park?
Nostrand Park (NP) is an award winning Brooklyn organization best known for its innovative, new community development model called “virtual place-making”: NP utilizes a full spectrum of new media tools to promote the art, culture, commercial, community revitalization of the vibrant neighborhood of Crown Heights.
Our online presence is complimented by our equally strong “on-the-ground” presence, where we engage in projects such merchant organizing, community greening and cleaning, and art expos. Crown Heights is experiencing a renaissance. And our mission is to see this culturally rich neighborhood regarded as a premier NYC destination.
Our contributors are a mixture of longtime Crown Heights residents and recent transplants, renters and homeowners, and just as diverse racially and ethnically. To that end we embody the diversity that makes this Brooklyn village such an invigorating place to reside.
Crown Heights is a complex neighborhood. It is a neighborhood of mansions and projects and historic districts. Of rastas and rabbis. Of new comers and old timers. It is a beautiful story of immigration and gentrification. Of decay and rebirth. Of affluence and struggle. Crown Heights is so much richer and fuller than what is currently available in the media and we wanted to create a space to honor that. Thus, Nostrand Park was born.
But what exactly is “Nostrand Park”?
No, it is not an enclave or park in Crown Heights. Nostrand and Park are two Brooklyn streets that run through Crown Heights. Though many of the borders in Crown Heights are contested, the intersection of Nostrand and Park represents one area that is undeniably Crown Heights. And so we are Nostrand Park.
In recognition of the efforts of Nostrand Park’s staff and volunteers and its strong backing among Crown Heights community members, Nostrand Park was accepted in to the Fund For the City of New York’s prestigious non-profit incubator program in April 2010.
Our current initiatives:
Invigorate Community
Revitalize Commercial
Encourage Art/Culture
Promote Neighborhood
