Fashion show, music, celebration party for Pieces Boutique.  Takes place at Kai Studio in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.  Haven’t been to Kai ourselves, but we hear the place is fabulous.

Here’s a photo of our share from the Central Brooklyn CSA on Wednesday July 28. Beautiful green peppers for the first time this season! As well, we received two types of lettuce, leeks, oregano, corn, beets, red potatoes, carrots and zucchini. The fruit share (which I forgot to pick up!) consisted of plums, nectarines and peaches. And, as usual, a terrific dozen eggs.

For you Central Brooklyn CSA members, did you know that there is a Planning Team which works on tasks involving the direction, and day-to-day running of the CSA? If not, we invite you to attend our next meeting on Thursday, August 5th. We’ll be meeting at 7 PM at LaunchPad, a meeting space at 721 Franklin Ave (on the corner of Park Place). At this meeting we will be discussing the direction of the CSA, including newsletter design, event planning, volunteer coordination, farmer communication, and community building.

Getting involved with the Planning Team is a great way to fulfill your volunteer hours if you are unable to volunteer at distribution. If you have any feedback on your experience with the CSA, or if you would just like to be more involved, please consider attending! Got the word on this “Nothing But Networking” event coming up on Fulton on July 29th.  Ok, so it ain’t in Crown Heights.  But for free wine, music, and hors d’oeuvres, only a block away – it’s close enough for us!

On Saturday July 24th, About Time Boutique hosts their 3rd annual Kids Day.  Beginning at 12pm and running through 5pm, the KIDS DAY is help in conjunction with Crow Hill Community Association.  About Time boutique founder, Kevin Phillip has been diligently working to help bring this event together.  Along with partnering with CHCA, Phillip has also garnered support from Council Member Letitia James and extensive media coverage for what promises to be a fun-filled day for Crown Heights’ youth and families.

On Monday, July 19, the 28th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Concert Series at Wingate Field, just south of Crown Heights in Flatbush, welcomes Grammy Award-winner Toni Braxton. This free concert begins at 7:30pm, but arrive early because there’s sure to be a long line. Upcoming concerts at Wingate include Chrisette Michelle, Musiq Soulchild, Sean Paul, and Salt n Pepa.  For more info on the MLK Concert series and directions to Wingate Field click here.

Following the success of last year the E. Park Place Block Association is once again inviting skateboarders of all shapes and sizes to their block party event. The Uptown Skate School will be there from 1-3PM for those who want to give it a try in a supportive and non-threatening atmosphere. A quieter side of the street will also be reserved for smaller kids with activities and live music. Smaller children can bring their trikes and bikes.

There will be a Block Star competition 3-6PM for the one who can do the best tricks. The couch will be back!

The reading series will feature debut novelists TEDDY WAYNE, whose book Kapitoil centers on a computer programmer from Quatar who comes to the U.S. to help avert Y2K disaster, and DEANNA FEI,  whose book A Thread of Sky focuses on three generations of Chinese-American women on a pilgrimage to China  They’ll be joined by  journalist  AARON LAKE SMITH (Time, Vice).

Coinciding with summer vacation season, July’s theme is “Travels and Journeys’” The poet and musician TAI ALLEN, who fuses music, poetry and prose into innovative live performances, will also be making a special appearance. Here’s one of Tai’s clips:
