What Goes Up – 600 St. Marks Avenue

Spotted construction activity at 600 St. Marks recently. Seems like balconies are going up.  A little bit of digging around with our shovel called Google revealed that the previous owners had apparently been caught up with a mortgage fraud scandal involving the building.   Then, it was burned down by an arsonist during a slew of arsons in 2006. Hopefully this building will see a lot less controversy in its new life.  Welcome back.

Recruitment!

NP Editors Note: Click the link to the oral history blog below and follow the progress of four students from Paul Robeson High School as they endeavor to document the history of our neighborhood. This is perhaps one of the easiest ways that we all can support our local youth.  They’d probably be even more encouraged if you posted a comment. If our young people see how receptive the community is to their positive work, perhaps the project can garner even more interest from local youth. We will...

Can Starlite Lounge Be Saved?

NP Update (2/19/10 at 11:29 a.m.): We just received the following (uncorroborated) email from a tipster: Just heard a tip that Starlite was served with a 72 hour Notice to vacate on Tuesday!!!!  They could be forcibly removed today. But the tipster also noted that court records indicate that Starlite still has a pending case in front of the court, which might mean that they actually have some time before the landlord can try to make them vacate. Interestingly enough, we were walking by Star...

Protest at Starlite Lounge

Yesterday, the Damon S. Allen Foundation Against Violence, in collaboration with community groups and residents of Crown Heights, hosted a press conference protesting the eviction of the historic Starlite Lounge, the oldest Black-owned, non-discriminating pub in Brooklyn. From the press release "For the last five decades the Starlite Lounge has been a safe haven to members of our community and a space of significant historical relevance for New York City residents. This incredible run in ...

It’s the little things…

The great thing about photography is learning to see the little things. I have a very understanding wife who is used to me taking photos of everything whenever we go somewhere. What drives her nuts, though, is when I stop to take a photo of a drain cover or manhole cover or, even worse, stuff I see on the sidewalks and roads. Especially things that are embedded in the asphalt or odd things captured in cement. Here's a collection of photos taken on Park Place. Get the flash player here: http:/...
