How will Atlantic Yards Affect Crown Heights?

Now that it seems that Atlantic Yards is pretty much a done deal, we were curious what folks think might be the spillover effects, if any, on Crown Heights. Interestingly, during last year's local city council elections, almost all of the candidates for Crown Heights' 36th district - a district located at the bookend of Atlantic Yards - said that they were in favor of the project.  The candidates for the 35th district - which covers not only parts of Crown Heights but also the heart of the A...

Crown Heights Real Estate Roundup: February 2010

When I reported that real estate activity in Crown Heights had gotten off to a slow start for 2010, I had my concerns. For the record, it's not unusual under normal market conditions to begin the year with slow sales.  The holiday season often causes home shoppers to suspend their search to spend time with family. But we're not in a normal market. In fact, we're far from it.  As the expiration of the Home Buyer Tax Credit draws near, home shoppers are taking longer to make offers.  And ...

What Goes Up – 600 St. Marks Avenue

Spotted construction activity at 600 St. Marks recently. Seems like balconies are going up.  A little bit of digging around with our shovel called Google revealed that the previous owners had apparently been caught up with a mortgage fraud scandal involving the building.   Then, it was burned down by an arsonist during a slew of arsons in 2006. Hopefully this building will see a lot less controversy in its new life.  Welcome back.

Update: New Hotel in Crown Heights

We'd read about the new hotel development going up near the Nostrand Ave LIRR stop on Brownstoner some time ago, and decided to be a bit nosy and check in on the progress.  Seems like things are coming along at this work-site. Peeking in, we could make out what would likely be a concierge desk, and the lights were on in the rooms in the upper floors. At the time  of the Brownstoner post, there was a lot of commentary regarding whether it would be a hotel or a motel, and whether it would b...
