Restaurant Openings This Week- Dutch Boy Burger and Basil Pizza & Wine Bar

Just a heads up for our local foodies- I Love Franklin Avenue reports (via an article in Time Out New York) that new Dutch Boy Burger will be opening this week.  Additionally, the Crown Heights News blog reports that the new pizza and wine bar, Basil, will open today. We called the restaurant to confirm, but just got a voice message.  Given the Jewish Sabbath, we are curious what the days and hours of operation will be.  In any event, the menu for Basil is now available on CHN's website, so chec...

Dutch Boy Burgers on Franklin

The awning for the new burger joint on Franklin Avenue - which we blogged about a while back - went up earlier this week.  And about just as cool as the news of this new awning, is our photographer, Abeni G.'s, photo technique capturing the old time feel of the venue - if we do say so ourselves.  Click image to enlarge.  We didn't speak with the owners (who also own Franklin Park) but undoubtedly the name, "Dutch Boy Burgers" is a homage to the Dutch Boy Paint shop that used to exist in the loca...

Coming Soon – Basil Pizza and Wine Bar

We decided to take a gander at the new kosher pizza and wine bar going up at the corner of Kingston and Lincoln that folks have been buzzing about recently**.  It's looking good.  They also have a website up, but there's no menu available yet. Looks like we're not the only ones curious about this place.  Just as we went to publish this piece, we came across this update from Thanksaglatt.com, which reports: this "will be the first kosher wood oven pizzeria in Brooklyn (maybe even in N...

Organic selections coming to a bodega near you?

I was hipped to this quaint organic section in one of the Korean fruit markets on Nostrand (between Union and President) the other day; and quite honestly, it caught me off guard.  A couple of days later I spotted an organic section in another fruit market on Nostrand on the north side of Eastern Parkway near Lincoln Place. After thinking about it for a while, I'm not sure why I was so surprised.  Nam's on Franklin Avenue converted to organic a while ago.   Long before Nam's made the chan...

And The Winner Is…Pulp and Bean

When NP first started a reader posted a query on our forum page asking where others got their coffee in the area. Months later that question failed to generate any responses. That forum query appeared in the BB (Before Bristen's) era,  long before The Glass Shop, and long before Franklin Avenue became a coffeehouse mecca.  If you had told us back then that a subsequent poll on coffee shops would draw almost 3oo responses we would think you were joking.  Back then if you wanted a good cup of ...

Abigail’s Café and Wine Bar is For Sale

Apparently, Abigail's Café and Wine Bar, 807 Classon Ave., is for sale.  The asking price is $675,000. It's a shame that the owners couldn't make it a success. Open for a little under two years now, Abigail's seemed to have problems from the start. It's difficult to make any money without a liquor license, which it took them many months after opening to obtain. As one reviewer on the Brooklynian web site said, it's easier to deal with their notoriously slow service if you have a drink in ...

Wine Spots Around Crown Heights

By Laurel Brown and Ferentz Lafargue While attending a small get-together this weekend someone mentioned that the Heights Chateau, located at 123 Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn Heights, will deliver wines to Crown Heights. We were amazed, because as most of us can attest, it's hard to cajole businesses to deliver to the "fringe".  And we definitely wouldn't expect a Brooklyn Heights wine bar to be so open.  Yet, even though our party was on Union Street between New York  and Brooklyn Aven...

Brunch at Chavella’s

In light of our recent poll results, folks won't be too surprised to read this great review in the Examiner about the brunch at Chavella's, which is located on Classon Ave in Crown Heights.
