Kids and families rejoice, because all the fun that was had during Kid’s Day shall continue!!

That’s right – some of your favorite local businesses – Super Wings, Knaps, Red Wagon, Tony’s Pizza (to name a few) have banded together with Assemblyman Karim Camara to launch their first annual back-to-school give back and street fair.  This event looks like it will be packed with activities such as a talent show, face painting, kid’s fashion show, and free food samples.

Having coordinated a big back-to-school event in the past, I know that these type of givebacks, are very popular for residents – particularly when it comes to free school supplies.  So even if you don’t plan to partake, make sure to tell a neighbor!!

Word on the street is that the Jewel in the Crown Spa – the upscale spa and nail salon located at 1216 Union Street (between Nostrand and Rogers), which first opened in August 2007 and then closed a year later – will be reopening under new ownership **as a completely new establishment.

**NP Update: 2/11/10 at 6:23 a.m.:  We’ve heard from a trustworthy source, that while 1216 Union will indeed be back in business soon, it is not likely to be coming back as a nail salon/spa.  For the time being, we will have to leave you in suspense as to what type of establishment we can expect to see in it’s place, but stay tuned…

UPDATE: REMINDER – TODAY – SATURDAY – FEB. 13th

Yes, folks, it’s the ultimate of cock fights - the battle for the best chicken wings in Brooklyn.  Next Saturday, February 13th, 16 wing shacks from around Brooklyn – including our very own Super Wings - will face off at Greenpoint’s Red Star Bar in a battle for the title of “The Best Wings in Brooklyn. ”

Of course, our support is with local favorite, Super Wings. Even though they’ve only been on the scene for 5 months, reviews of Super Wings’ wings might cause long-time wing institutions such as Wing Wagon to chicken out of the competition (badum-ching!).  Owner and Medgar Evers Business School alum, Colette Burnett told us “We plan to bring our A-Game, which we have to do competing against such an esteemed group of restaurants.”  For those who’ve eaten at Super Wings, weigh in here on which wings you think they should enter into the competition:

So should you find yourself either bored and/or hungry next Saturday, head on over to Red Star Bar (2 blocks from G train at Greenpoint) at 2:00pm for the wing fest!  And if you’d like to represent for Super Wings, they’ll be giving out t-shirts  to the first 50 people on the Friday before the competition from 5p – 11p.

Look, it’s a bird! No, not up there. Look lower. On the ground. Of the fowl sorts. Off the corner of Nostrand and Union comes Super Wings, a wings joint with a tasty Caribbean twist. Being from Florida, wings are one of my ultimate delights. When my wife told me one was being built, my heart fluttered. I mean, you can’t watch the Gators on the road to win another championship without wings, right? Living off Nostrand Avenue & Eastern Parkway, I thought to myself, “Well, the best you can ever hope for now is jerk and roti.” Thanks to Super Wings, I won’t have to cry myself to sleep anymore.
 
I happened to stroll over there on a recent Thursday night, expecting to see an empty store but to my surprise it was relatively packed. Looking at the menu, I wanted to try something safe. Although, Bajan Merry Mango and Ginger Buff sound delightful, I decided to get the Chili Cilantro. (In fact, I don’t think I would ever want to encounter a buff Ginger). I had heard from the forums that I could order by the pound, and since I knew my wife would kill me if I inhaled a full pound of meat, I decided to get a half. Hey, what can you say? I’m health conscious.

With all the people at the store, I was actually glad I brought my headphones and squatted on the window sill. With a view into the kitchen, I noticed joyful workers. Matter of fact, whatever the cook was listening to, I probably should have had. While he was cooking up my dinner, he was dancing a happy jig. A dancing cook? In New York? My eyes were checking his smock for a fifth of rum.

Nevertheless, at the end of my brief entertainment, my order was up. I was shocked. Fast service! An automatic A. If the food could satisfy me like the customer service did, I’ll give it the plus. To be truthful, I didn’t get my hopes up. The best wings I know of to get anywhere are at Dick’s Wings in North Florida (I can’t wait to go back!). Upon sinking my teeth into them I won’t say my mind was changed, but I will say they definitely get an A+. Remarkably scrumptious. So here’s my suggestion: next time the Giants, er, Trini futbol team amps up, amble on down to Super Wings. They are open late on Saturdays and Sundays now. Make sure you get the S on your chest.
